I was reading on the bus this morning, minding my own buisness, when some lady asked if I liked to read. "No I like to torture myself by doing things I hate" I thought, but, trying to be polite, I answered "yes." She showed me the book she had just finished, called Mutant, and said it was really good. She said that she had bought it at a garage sale for only a quarter, and that I should keep it. Still being polite I took it. The problem is I have zero desire to read this book, but I occassionally see this lady on the bus and she may ask if I liked it. I can't decide if I want to read it (it might be good...anything is possible) to get her off my back, or not read it and risk being rude when she asks why I haven't read it yet. *SIGH* Why can't people just leave you alone on the bus?

I haven't been to a midnight movie in a while, but Thursday night (OK, technically Friday morning) I saw I, Robot. I had been looking forward to it for a while, not because I am into Will Smith summer extravaganzas (though there are certainly enough of them!) or Isaac Asimov (never read one of his books), but because of director Alex Proyas whose film Dark City was incredible. Not only did I, Robot live up to my expectations, but it exceeded them! It had a great story that unfolded well, an excellent visual look (Proyas hard at work!), amazing special effects, and some great action. Though I was worried that Will Smith - who also served as executive producer on the film - would hamper the film, preventing it from rising above typical summer blockbuster, he was actually the perfect choice for the movie. He brought a sense of "normal-joe" to the film and was able to make me laugh, but was also able to give the character of Detective Spooner some depth when it came to the more dramatic scenes. I guess this makes up for Men in Black 2. In conclusion, I highly recommend everyone go see I, Robot. It was even good enough for me to put Asimov's original book on my reading list!

An interesting side note about the movie: some people are accusing the filmmakers or ripping off Bjork's music video "All is Full of Love," whose robots bear a striking resemblance to those in I. Robot. My thoughts? It's a movie based on a book (technically, it was an independent screenplay, which was only somewhat similar to Asimov's book, but was then reworked to serve as the movie adaptation. Hence, the "suggested by" rather than "based on" credit for Asimov), made by Hollywood. Not exactly original groundwork, so those critics shouldn't be expecting too much. They should not worry about petty details like that, and appreciate the other excellent attributes of the film. Though, to be honest, I DO see the similarities! I am Bjork fan, as well as a fan of the video's director, Chris Cunningham,  but am I having a cow? NO! They need to get over it. Read the full article here.
