It is
official: Disney now OWNS Pixar. I was happy with the their old distribution deal myself, which kept Disney out of the creative process of Pixar's movies. After all, Disney hasn't made a good animated flick on their own since...well,
The Lion King?? In recent years Disney has gone sequel crazy (
Bambi 2 is out on DVD next week), and is even in the beginning stages of making a
Toy Story 3 WITHOUT Pixar. However, the new deal will put John Lasseter (director of the first two
Toy Story movies, driving force of Pixar, and all around genius) in charge of both Disney and Pixar's animation studios, which will hopefully do three things: cancel any possibility of non-Pixar produced sequels to Pixar movies (including
TS3), keep Pixar quality up to the standard it has been thus far, and, just maybe, make non-Pixar produced Disney movies good again.
I have to say this does not come as much of a shock to me. I had been hearing rumblings of just such a purchase, and considering the deal Disney and Apple recently made to get
Desperate Housewives and
Lost into the iTunes store and onto the iPod video, it makes sense. Plus,
Michael Eisner's leaving Disney didn't hurt anything: rumor has it he and Jobs hated each other. Disney's new boss,
Robert Iger, seems to be aware that without Pixar, Disney doesn't have much to offer at the box office in the way of animated fare.
Also, Steve Jobs is now on Disney's board. Bill Gates eat your heart out.
